Miscellaneous Music No. 2

Aeroplane is awesome electronic music. Described as Emo, Italo-Pop and Psychedelic music, the first album We Can’t Fly is a nice niche experience combining groovy beats and guitars with some kind of ambient, oriental flair and inconspicuous backing vocals.

The project started out with two people forming the Italian-Belgian duo three years ago. They started their musical career by making disco dubs of known songs. But before the first personal album was released on September 27 Stephen Fasano left the duo to concentrate on solo project. So now Vito De Luca is leading Aeroplane into a hopefully nice future.

Listen to the music on MySpace, head over to the Aeroplane website for more information and buy the album on iTunes if you like.

Fabulous Fancy Fonts No. 2 — Acorde

The Font of this week was presented to me on the famous blog I Love Typography (I highly recommend subscribing to it).

Sample Image of Acorde font

It is called Acorde, designed during five years — from 2005–2010 — by Stefan Willerstorfer. It is a font which really can be used for everything from headlines to plain text, since it makes perfect use of whitespace and features sans-serif design and a real italic version.

After five years of intensive work, my type family Acorde is finally on the market. It is a reliable workhorse for large, demanding design projects. The typeface’s name is derived from a corporate design typeface. However, Acorde is not only suitable for corporate design programmes but for information design and editorial design too.

You should read through the article on I Love Typography, in which Willerstorfer describes the making of his typeface. And if you would like to purchase Acorde for your next design project (or for yourself, if you have too much money) head over to Willerstorfers company website and buy it.

Robot Regime — Ethics in Web design

I think ethical standards are important. The purpose of this site is to provoke discussion about the role of ethics in web design. If you care about ethics, please share your ideas.

An interesting and very important subject to me. Pirating does not solemnly affect music or video — it is also part of the design world. And everyone wants to be more ethical, right?

Stop it. Google won’t buy Twitter.

Here’s my simple reasoning for why Google won’t buy Twitter: Twitter won’t sell.
Those who decide whether Twitter goes to Google pretty much come down to a handful of folks: Founders Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey, and Biz Stone, with COO Dick Costolo and Twitter’s investors and other Board members (Fred Wilson, Peter Fenton, and Bijan Sabet). I know most of these guys well enough to say this with confidence: They don’t want to sell, and even more importantly, they don’t need to.

Very nice read by John Battelle about the power of social networks and how they can affect a whole industry by acting economically.
Personally, I do not want Google get its hands on Twitter as well. Look what they did to Blogger or Feedburner. These services did not really improve since their acquisition. And Eric Schmidt is not kind enough to lead Twitter…

Miscellaneous Music No. 1

(Be aware of a little delay between the audio and the video)

Here comes Yoav. He is guitarist coming from Israel who packed his bag to cruise to America and play his music there. His sound is produced by an acoustic guitar loaded with effects and sounds more like drum&base than a romantic guitar sound. Which is great, because it is new.

An exceptional singer/songwriter Yoav is a much talked about artist. His unique musical influences have resulted in a sound that fuses the singer-songwriter tradition with Eastern scales and rhythms, all rooted in a dance-club groove.

All of the sounds on Charmed and Strange and, for the most part, on A Foolproof Escape Plan were created on the acoustic guitar, all drums, bass, keyboard and piano sounds were beaten and dragged out of his trusty Lowden acoustic. The live performance follows the same route, with the help of several loop stations and Yoav’s unusually hand-like feet.

Head over to Yoav’s website to learn more about him and to listen to some more of his songs.
